Each day, thousands of students, faculty, staff and guests arrive through the doors of the Michigan Union North Entrance. When the renovation to the Union is complete in 2020, visitors will find a more welcoming, open and light-infused entrance. An enclosed ADA-accessible ramp will be one of the new features.
The new curved canopy design for the enhanced entrance will provide a bright and inviting experience with cut-out panels that let the sun shine through. The reconceptualization also moves the ramp -- once located on the outer east wall of the entrance with a separate entry door -- to be be an integral part of the doorway.
“The design incorporates feedback we heard from the campus community and we worked to create a more welcoming, inclusive entrance with accessibility for all. This modification will be a critical element in the success of the building,” explains Diana Adzemovic, Lead Design Manager. “The new north entrance will do this in a way that is in keeping with the historical architecture of the building, to which students past and present are deeply attached.”
The North Entrance design is an important part of the overall goal of restoring the original detail of the building while revitalizing the Union as a home-like gathering place for students and guests to meet, interact, relax, study and more. The canopy design is consistent with the original architectural aesthetics of the building and carries throughout the Union’s entrances.
“The entire design is geared to making the building easy to navigate and access for people of all abilities,” she says.
Other planned improvements to the building that enhance inclusivity will be:
A new elevator and stair at the south end of the north-south corridor to provide improved accessibility to the existing mezzanine level
Gender inclusive restrooms on each floor
A personal room on the second level
A family restroom on the second level
