Pierpont Commons is one of the three Unions, but is the only one located on North Campus. The building is named after Wilbur K. Pierpont, the Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, who guided growth on North Campus. The building opened in 1965 to accommodate the new community’s need for space and services. Since its opening, Pierpont Commons has experienced several renovations to adapt to and meet the needs of the North Campus community. The most recent renovation was completed in 2015, which turned the cafeteria area, The Common Cafe, into the popular Fireside Café and Fireside Roast. This is the result of efforts by the students of Building a Better Michigan.
Pierpont Commons is home to 75 international flags, representing the countries of all students attending the colleges on North Campus. Art created by students and community members line the walls in the gallery and Piano room.
Pierpont Commons is student-centered. It has numerous restaurants, including Ahmo’s Gyros & Deli, Fireside Cafe and Fireside Roast, Hibachi-San, Mujo’s Cafe (at Duderstadt), Panda Express and U-Go’s. It houses tons of study spots, as well as great places to meet with friends or just hangout. There is a Barnes and Noble so students can grab all of their school supplies. It’s the perfect place to relax, study, play pool or even find quiet time in the peaceful Reflection Room.
If classes or living brings you to North Campus, you will find yourself hanging out in Pierpont quite a bit. In the winter months, it is the perfect place to stay warm while waiting for a bus to Central. See you soon!
