Summer Spaces and Places at the Unions

Summer is a great time to be on campus at the University of Michigan. You can enjoy the beautiful campus scenery at places like the Diag or the Arb. Or grab food from your favorite campus eateries to enjoy in the sun-filled Union Courtyard or peaceful League Garden. However you choose to spend your time, there are lots of ways to have an incredible summer experience at U-M.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Michigan Union Courtyard

Enjoy an open-sky view from one of the most iconic buildings on campus! The enclosed courtyard is a versatile space where you can grab a spot to study, catch up with friends, or enjoy a variety of delicious food options. For summer, we love refreshing beverages from Sweetwaters, classic sandwiches from Panera, or fresh grab-and-go snacks from Blue Market.

Michigan League Garden

Order food to-go from Maizie’s Kitchen & Market, then grab a table in the garden to admire the flowers and sculptures over lunch. Or you can head over to the League garden with a group of friends for a relaxing study session and some fresh air.

Pierpont Commons

Nestled in the woods, our North Campus Union offers high ceilings and large windows perfect for soaking up the summer sunshine! Grab a window seat and enjoy lunch from a variety of authentic restaurants and eateries. Then take an afternoon walk through the North Campus Diag known as the Grove.

The Diag

The Central Campus Diag can be one of the busiest spots at U-M. It also offers quiet, grassy areas for taking a break in between classes or enjoying a picnic with a group of friends. And be sure to keep an eye out for events like concerts, fundraisers, and more.

The Arb

Take a stroll to reset and unwind, get in some steps with a friend, or take in all that nature has to offer at the Nichols Arboretum. Open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. You can enter from Geddes Avenue, Washington Heights, or Nichols Drive.

Have a great summer!
