Michigan Union wins ACUI design award!

University Unions is pleased to announce that the Michigan Union has been awarded the International Design Award for Projects Over $55 Million by ACUI (formerly known as the Association of College Unions International). The award recognizes excellence in the design of student-centered facilities that support community building and student learning on campus.

This is a particularly exciting distinction because, in part, it reflects the hard work of the student advisory group Building a Better Michigan (BBM) and the Michigan Union Board of Representatives (MUBR). Formed in 2011,with student leadership from MUBR and the Recreational Sports Advisory Council, BBM gives students the opportunity to provide input and ideas about the future development of University Unions and Recreational Sports buildings.

The award also celebrates the work of Integrated Design Solutions, in partnership with Workshop Architectsand Hartman-Cox Architects. These three organizations played a crucial role in bringing the vision of the renovated Union to life.

The award was presented in March at the ACUI annual conference in Chicago. The presentation highlighted the Michigan Union’s glass-covered courtyard,  coworking-inspired IdeaHub for student organizations, spaces for inclusion and care, and expanded lounges for studying and socializing.

We invite every member of the university community to join us in celebrating this national recognition of the Michigan Union.
